Friday 30th April 2004
Really good day. Today, I picked my son,
Anthony, up from work as he was going with me for
my pre-op assessment. On arrival at ward 18 of Bradford
Royal Infirmary, a nurse took some blood samples,
blood pressure, pulse and I also had my heart checked;
all routine stuff they tell before any operation.
We were then showed around the ward. A really nice
nurse called Carol then explained what they were
going to do during the exploratory operation; right
tonsil removed, small biopsy of my nasal passage
and also a good look around my throat. We talked
about various things and she said she would contact
Sarah Cost who is their Macmillan Head and Neck
Cancer Nurse Specialist. Sarah was not there but
later came down whilst I was having my heart checked.
Carol came down to find me to say if I wanted Sarah,
she could see me now. This was very kind of both
of them, I’m sure, had more urgent things
that needed attending to. We spent a good hour or
so with Sarah who was very helpful at putting things
in perspective. She was able to answer many of Anthony’s
questions and mine. She also informed me that the
consultants who would be dealing with me were top
notch as would be the radiologist. On leaving the
hospital, I felt the best I have since my diagnosis
last Friday.
On the way home, Anthony and I went to KFC for 24
chicken wings; we ate all of them except for four
pieces, not bad going! I got home and made myself
a lamb curry, which is now in the oven. Hopefully
I will eat some before my brother-in-law arrives
to take me out for my usual few pints and maybe
I will even finish it off when I get home.
