BREAKTHROUGH CANCER TREATMENT A STEP CLOSER TODAY
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has today issued a preliminary positive recommendation (Appraisal Consultation Document) for the use of cetuximab (Erbitux®) in combination with radiotherapy for the treatment of locally advanced head and neck cancer.

BARNEHURST MOUTH CANCER SURVIVOR RAISES £2000.00 FOR CHARITY
Mouth Cancer Survivor, Caroline McClean from Barnehurst took part in a giant sponsored walk in London’s Hyde Park, and has succeeded in raising nearly £2000 to increase awareness for the deadly disease.

MOUTH CANCER DRUG MAY SOON BE AVAILABLE ON NHS
Today, the Mouth Cancer Foundation came a step closer to making sure all Mouth Cancer
patients have access to a new drug, currently not widely available on the NHS. The drug in
question is called ‘Cetuximab’ and is a new cancer treatment available in Scotland since July
2006, but not England and Wales at present.
It is hoped that cetuximab in combination with radiotherapy can be used as an alternative in
Mouth cancer patients for whom chemoradiotheraphy is in appropriate.
The charity successfully convinced the Appeal Panel of the National Institute for Health
and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to ask its Appraisal Committee’s to reconsider its appraisal
decision to ban the drug for head and neck cancer patients in England and Wales. The
appraisal has now been returned to the Committee.

NED SHERRIN DIES FROM THROAT CANCER
Today, the Founder of the Mouth Cancer Foundation, Dr Vinod Joshi, paid tribute to one of
Britain’s best known broadcasters and writers, Ned Sherrin, who has died from throat
Cancer. “I was very sad to learn of the death of Ned Sherrin, such an inspiring comedy
writer and broadcaster from Throat Cancer. He will be greatly missed”.

Us”, lead West End theatre star Julie Atherton headlining in “Avenue Q” and Actress and
Comedian Helen Lederer from “Absolutely Fabulous” who has first hand experience of the
disease when a former boyfriend died from mouth cancer.
